Dramatic Irony

Dramatic irony
occurs when the audience knows something a character does not.
  • "by avenging Laius / I defend myself" (Sophocles 167)
  • With our foreknowledge of Oedipus's fate, we feel the dramatic irony of Oedipus destroying himself rather than "defend[ing] [him]self."
