Finish Sophocles's Oedipus the King. Given what we read together in class on Day 2, this is only 21 or 22 pages....

Due Friday, September 12 (both sections)

Tonight, just prepare to write: Select a quote or two that could found the basis of an in-class essay tomorrow. Hyperannotate your text. Make notes. Offer a close reading of both the words and the form.

The topic will be the same as what we wrote about for The Remains of the Day:

"In many works of literature, past events can affect, positively or negatively, the present actions, attitudes, or values of a character." Using Oedipus the King, "write an essay in which you show how the character's relationship to the past contributes to the meaning of the work as a whole." (AP, 2007)

At this stage in our writing process, we're going to skip writing an introduction. We're just going to jump right into the middle assuming the reader (and we) know where we're going. The challenge: explain how a close reading of the words and form of your quote(s) can open up new understandings about Oedipus's relationship to his past.
